Increase Competence and Marketability for a Career in Urban Agriculture

The twelve (12) week Sustainable Urban Agriculture Certificate Course begins on March 3, 2018 through May 26, 2018. The classes are held on Saturdays, from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.

The course fee is $190 and covers in-class sessions, hands-on activities, educational materials, continental breakfast, and lunch.

A limited number of full and partial scholarships are available on a first-come, first-served basis. The deadline to apply for scholarships is February 16, 2018

All participants are required to attend the March 3, 2018 orientation from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.

All courses will be held in Room 300 in the L. Douglas Wilder Building, 1 Hayden Drive on the campus of Virginia State University unless otherwise stated. Demonstrations will be conducted at the University’s Randolph Farm, located at 4415 River Road, Petersburg, Virginia 23803.

  • General Principles of Urban Agriculture
  • Basic Botany, Physiology, and Environmental Effects of Plant Growth
  • Crop Pest and Disease Management
  • Business Principles of Urban Agriculture
  • Permaculture; Vegetable and Small Fruit Production
  • Brownfields and Safe Gardening Practices
  • Greenhouse Production-Aquaponics/Hydroponics
  • Plant Propagation and Nursery Management
  • Backyard Rearing

Please note: To complete the course, you must attend all classes. If you are unable to complete the course there will be no refund of the registration fee.

Instructions are provided by Virginia State University and Virginia Tech Faculty, Agriculture and Natural Resources Extension Agents and featured guest speakers.
