Pruning is often neglected either due to a lack of skill or fear that improper pruning could lead to the injury or death of a tree. Pruning reduces overall tree size, improves structural strength, increases fruit production and improves the quality of fruit. Come and join us for this hands-on demonstration on pruning fruit trees for the beginner. Please feel free to bring any pruning tools that you may have for this workshop. The term controlled environment agriculture (CEA) encompasses various innovative farming practices, such as greenhouse cultivation and vertical farming, which harness controlled environments to optimize crop growth.

During this tour we will visit IALR (Institute for Advanced Learning and Research) to discuss CEA, exploring its role in supporting/supplementing traditional farming, enhancing crop quality, and ensuring year-round production. Gain a comprehensive understanding of why CEA is vital for addressing modern agricultural challenges, including climate change, resource scarcity, and food security.

The workshop will be outside on an operating Christmas tree farm.  Attendees should wear appropriate shoes and clothing.

Ever wonder where samples go after your veterinarian collects them from your animal? You are invited to see what is involved in testing diagnostic samples that you or your veterinarian send to the lab.  Get a behind the scenes look at what happens between the time samples are taken and when you get the results in hand.

Producers will gain knowledge of services offered by the Virginia Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services and a brief overview of diseases that affect Sheep and Goat species.  Come learn what samples are required for diagnostic testing.  The meeting will conclude with a tour of the Wytheville VDACS laboratory, which is one of only 35 Level 1 National Animal Laboratory Health Network certified laboratories across the US.

What is Heirs Property 101? Estate planning, land transition, land access and land succession. This training will educate landowners and extension staff about Heirs Property at the community level. The workshop will also offer land inheritance education and resources to disadvantaged landowners and their heirs. Special guest presenter Lillian “Ebonie” Alexander, the Executive Director of the Black Family Land Trust, Inc., lives on her family farm in rural Southside Virginia. She will discuss the challenges families face in retaining land and family communication surrounding land inheritance. She will also share resources and steps for successful family land assets building and succession. The VSU Heirs Property team consists of the Small Farm Outreach Program, The Black Family Land Trust, The Tennie Group, S. Miller Law Firm and our Virginia Tech Extension Partners. The VSU-SFOP Heirs Property training model will be used to educate other extension professionals who work with landowners and underserved communities.
