Virtual Zoom Workshop

This two-hour Zoom course is for new farmers with zero to five years of experience operating a farm. Ben Dukes and Derrick Gooden, regional program assistants for the VSU Small Farm Outreach Program, and Dr. Nartea, extension specialist for VSU Integrated Marketing Program, will walk attendees through the process of how to develop a productive and profitable farm. Participants will receive a Small Farm Orientation manual.

Anita will speak about what is needed to assist farmers in receiving multiple grant awards. She will share information on planning, developing budgets and understanding grant scoring criteria. She will also share some unique tips and talk about her experience as a grant reviewer.

Lambing & Kidding: Beyond the Basics

Calling all beginning and experienced sheep/goat producers…Join this session to gain valuable knowledge of best management practices for pre-lambing/kidding and post-lambing/kidding. This workshop includes a hands-on demonstration with a birthing model.  Additional topics include preventing lamb/kid loss, the importance of colostrum, strategies for troubleshooting when birthing complications occur, and diagnosing and treating newborn lamb/kid problems.  Dinner will be provided.

Christmas Tree Production for Small Landowners

Christmas tree plantings are a vialble option for small landowners.  Topics to be discussed: Site selection, pre-planting site preparation, species selection, planting methods, insect and disease pressure, tree and sod maintenance, harvesting, and marketing,  Additional items of interest will be other types of income from a Christmas tree farm. The workshop will be outside on an operating Christmas tree farm.  Attendees should wear appropriate shoes and clothing.

VDACS Animal Lab Tour

Ever wonder where samples go after your veterinarian collects them from your animal? You are invited to see what is involved in testing diagnostic samples that you or your veterinarian send to the lab.  Get a behind the scenes look at what happens between the time samples are taken and when you get the results in hand.

Producers will gain knowledge of services offered by the Virginia Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services and a brief overview of diseases that affect Sheep and Goat species.  Come learn what samples are required for diagnostic testing.  The meeting will conclude with a tour of the Wytheville VDACS laboratory, which is one of only 35 Level 1 National Animal Laboratory Health Network certified laboratories across the US.

Youth and Beginning Agricultural WOrkers Safety Training

Small Farm Orientation

This two-hour course is for new farmers with zero to five years of experience operating a farm. Ben Dukes and Derrick Gooden, regional program assistants for the VSU Small Farm Outreach Program, and Dr. Nartea, extension specialist for VSU Integrated Marketing Program, will walk attendees through the process of how to develop a productive and profitable farm. Participants will receive a Small Farm Orientation manual.

You may attend this course either online or at the G.A.T.E. Center, 122 State Rte T 1101, Independence, VA. Full details sent after registration.

What is Heirs Property 101

What is Heirs Property 101? Estate planning, land transition, land access and land succession. This training will educate landowners and extension staff about Heirs Property at the community level. The workshop will also offer land inheritance education and resources to disadvantaged landowners and their heirs. Special guest presenter Lillian “Ebonie” Alexander, the Executive Director of the Black Family Land Trust, Inc., lives on her family farm in rural Southside Virginia. She will discuss the challenges families face in retaining land and family communication surrounding land inheritance. She will also share resources and steps for successful family land assets building and succession. The VSU Heirs Property team consists of the Small Farm Outreach Program, The Black Family Land Trust, The Tennie Group, S. Miller Law Firm and our Virginia Tech Extension Partners. The VSU-SFOP Heirs Property training model will be used to educate other extension professionals who work with landowners and underserved communities.
