Fruit Tree Pruning for Beginners

Good pruning technique can increase the potential for quality fruit. Pruning is often neglected either due to a lack of skill or fear that improper pruning could lead to the injury or death of a tree. Pruning reduces overall tree size, improves structural strength, increases fruit production and improves the quality of fruit. Come and join us for this hands-on demonstration on pruning fruit trees for the beginner. Please feel free to bring any pruning tools that you may have for this workshop.

The workshop will be outside on an operating Christmas tree farm.  Attendees should wear appropriate shoes and clothing.

Virginia Tech's Catawba Sustainability CenterVirginia Tech’s Center for Systems and Community TransformationAppalachian Sustainable Development and partners are excited to invite you to this FREE two-day Agroforestry Training for Natural Resource Professionals Silvopasture Design Intensive. This event has been approved for NRCS Planner Certification Contact Hours: 8 total (4 each day), DCR Certified Conservation Planner Contact Hours: 8 total (4 each day), SAF Continuing Forestry Education Credits: 10 total (4.5, Day 1 and 5.5, Day 2). 


Agroforestry is a land use management system in which trees and/or shrubs are grown with crops and/or livestock. This intentional combination of agriculture and forestry has a variety of environmental and economic benefits. The increasing interest in agroforestry among land managers has produced a growing need for technical assistance.

Join us for a deep dive where we go beyond the basics to share the latest research, technical resources, and on the ground silvopasture case examples. Participants will learn about design tools and processes and then be guided through hands on design activities.

You’ll leave with a greater ability to support landowners with silvopasture technical assistance.

In this workshop, we will carefully review the six critical steps for pasture renovation. It’s important to note that pastures decline over time, but with proper care, the rate and severity of decline can be avoided. The workshop will answer several questions, including how to improve your pasture and why it is worth the effort.

Learn about eligibility requirements and how to apply for USDA Farm Service Agency (FSA) direct or guaranteed loans, as well as programs, service, and cost-share opportunities from other USDA agencies. Beginning, socially disadvantaged, and veteran farmers can get help to prepare applications for farm ownership and operating loans and learn about the requirements for borrowing. Find out about the resources and current grants that are available from USDA, including the Rural Development Renewable Energy for America (REAP) grant and loan guarantee program, Value-Added Producer Grant (VAPG) program, and Rural Business Enterprise Grant (RBEG) program. USDA Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) programs are also available. These programs can help you implement conservation practices to reduce soil erosion, enhance water supplies, improve water quality, increase wildlife habitat and reduce damages caused by floods and other natural disasters.

Joel Koci, VSU Urban/Community Forestry Extension Associate, will speak on the benefits of Forest Bathing. Studies have found that forest bathing has positive physiological effects, such as blood pressure reduction, improvement of autonomic and immune functions, and the psychological effects of alleviating depression and improving mental health. Studies have shown these effects on people of working age with and without depressive tendencies.

New Funding Opportunity

The Alliance to Advance Climate-Smart Agriculture is a pilot program that will incentivize farmers and ranchers to adopt climate-smart agriculture practices to maintain and improve agricultural productivity, benefit producers, and improve climate resilience. Under the three-year pilot program, the Alliance and its partners will help producers in Virginia prove the value of paying farmers and ranchers $100 per acre or animal unit for stewardship practices that deliver public value through carbon sequestration, greenhouse gas reduction, improved soil health, water quality, water conservation, and other environmental services. Virginia Tech will issue direct payments. Farms must be located within an eligible county in the Year One Project Map. There is a two (2) acre minimum, and farms must have a verified Farm Service Agency (FSA) Number. The land can not be enrolled in another state or federal conservation program in the same practice on the same acres. Virginia Chestnuts is a family owned and operated orchard with deep roots in Nelson County. Learn the basics of planning, production, processing, and marketing of Chinese chestnuts from the owner/operator of this farm. The workshop covers the last days of the harvest season of their 21 acres, and ideas about how chestnuts can function as a long-term cash crop and a mast source for livestock production.

Sustainable Forestry & Small Wood Lot Management

Sustainable forestry management is complex, with the need to manage trees, wildlife and the environment. We will discuss topics such as determining your management goals; working with forest professionals; timber sales and harvest; water quality; forest health; wildlife and other unexpected factors. We will also provide information on USDA programs and services relating to forestry management, tree planting and financial assistance. At the end of the workshop we will visit two forestry sites.

Invasive Species Affecting Virginia: Spotted Lanternfly and Asian Longhorn Tick

The Spotted Lanternfly is an invasive species native to Asia. In 2014 it was found in Pennsylvania, and has since spread to multiple counties in Pennsylvania, Maryland, and Virginia. This insect is a threat to many fruit crops and trees. The Asian Longhorn Tick is native to eastern Asia. It is a serious pest of livestock as well as pets. Cattle producers and homeowners should be aware of it. This important information will be presented by Scott Baker, ANR Agent in Bedford County.

What The Farm, Virginia Beach, VA


Chris and Kelly Shepherd, owners of What The Farm, incorporate farming and grazing practices that rebuild the soil organically while restoring degraded soil biodiversity in hopes to improve soil health. What The Farm is on a 33 acre plot with approximately 10 wooded acres used for agroforestry. They specialize in Dexter cattle, Dorper and St. Croix hair sheep, Duroc pigs, Cornish Cross chickens, and white turkeys. The Shepherds believe there is a better way compared to commercial farming operations and have focused on a simple mission of: serve the SOIL, serve the ANIMALS, serve the COMMUNITY.

Urban Forestry: the Need for Riparian Buffers

A riparian buffer is a perennial vegetated strip of land composed of trees and shrubs. This strip reduces runoff of soil, chemicals and other pollutants into the waterway. Riparian buffers aid in reducing flooding. They also recharge groundwater and help with biodiversity. Joel Koci, Urban/Community Forestry Extension Associate, will discuss installation methods, plant choice and maintenance procedures. He will also go over possible funding sources for the implementation of riparian buffers.

The goal is to improve water quality in our streams, rivers, and the nearby Chesapeake Bay. As an incentive, costshare assistance is offered to implement Best Management Practices. Participation in these programs is voluntary, and we offer our expertise at no cost. Funding is based on what our District has available and how your practice ranks compared to other applications we receive; though funding is not guaranteed.
