Sustainable Urban Agriculture Certificate Program (Spring 2025)

INCREASE COMPETENCE AND MARKETABILITY FOR A CAREER IN URBAN AGRICULTURE

Virginia State College of Agriculture Cooperative Extension will offer a twelve (12) week Urban Agriculture Certificate Course from March 1 through May 31, 2025.

The classes will be on Saturdays are from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m., at VSU Randolph Farm Pavilion, and will include lectures and hands-on experiential learning sessions. Those who choose the virtual option will be able to attend sessions online, and will receive the same kits for hands-on activities, the same educational materials, and the same certificate as those who choose the in-person option.

Course Topics Include:

  • General Principles of Urban Agriculture 

  • Basic Botany, Physiology, and Environmental Effects of Plant Growth 

  • Crop Pest and Disease Management 

  • Business Principles of Agriculture 

  • Permaculture; Vegetable and Small Fruit Production 

  • Urban Soils, Brownfields and Safe Gardening Practices 

  • Greenhouse Production-Aquaponics/Hydroponics 

  • Plant Propagation and Nursery Management 

  • Backyard Rearing 


Instruction are provided by Virginia State University and Virginia Tech Faculty, and featured guest speakers.

What is Heirs Property 101

What is Heirs Property 101

What is Heirs Property 101? Estate planning, land transition, land access and land succession. This training will educate landowners and extension staff about Heirs Property at the community level. The workshop will also offer land inheritance education and resources to disadvantaged landowners and their heirs. Special guest presenter Lillian “Ebonie” Alexander, the Executive Director of the Black Family Land Trust, Inc., lives on her family farm in rural Southside Virginia. She will discuss the challenges families face in retaining land and family communication surrounding land inheritance. She will also share resources and steps for successful family land assets building and succession. The VSU Heirs Property team consists of the Small Farm Outreach Program, The Black Family Land Trust, The Tennie Group, S. Miller Law Firm and our Virginia Tech Extension Partners. The VSU-SFOP Heirs Property training model will be used to educate other extension professionals who work with landowners and underserved communities.

  • Farm Credit representatives with instruction on how to develop a simple, one-page business plan;

What is Heirs Property 101? Estate planning, land transition, land access and land succession. This training will equip extension staff with the tools to provide education, training and outreach to underprivileged producers and landowners to improve their understanding of Heirs Property at the community level. The workshop will also offer land inheritance education and resources to disadvantaged landowners and their heirs. Special guest presenter Lillian “Ebonie” Alexander, the Executive Director of the Black Family Land Trust, Inc., lives on her family farm in rural Southside Virginia. She will discuss the challenges families face in retaining land and family communication surrounding land inheritance. She will also share resources and steps for successful family land assets building and succession. The VSU Heirs Property team consists of the Small Farm Outreach Program, The Black Family Land Trust, The Tennie Group, S. Miller Law Firm and our Virginia Tech Extension Partners. The VSU-SFOP Heirs Property training model will be used to educate other extension professionals who work with landowners and underserved communities.

End-of-the-year tax information is more straightforward to compile, and financial decisions and banking concerns are streamlined. Join us to discuss the records and receipts you should keep on the farm.

Come join other farmers for an educational workshop to help beginning and experienced farmers learn to manage accounting and recordkeeping for their businesses. This workshop is presented by a local tax preparer and accountant with years of experience helping others while running her own successful small business. The topics to be covered include setting up financial records; preparing a chart of accounts; entering payments, deposits and invoices; tracking customers; creating estimates; reconciling bank statements; analyzing financial data and printing reports. Participants that complete the course will receive a one-year free subscription to Quickbooks.
